    Stationary structures in two-dimensional continuous Heisenberg ferromagnetic spin system

    Stationary structures in a classical isotropic two-dimensional continuous Heisenberg ferromagnetic spin system are studied in the framework of the (2+1)-dimensional Landau-Lifshitz model. It is established that in the case of \vec S (\vec r, t)= \vec S (\vec r - \vec v t) the Landau-Lifshitz equation is closely related to the Ablowitz-Ladik hierarchy. This relation is used to obtain soliton structures, which are shown to be caused by joint action of nonlinearity and spatial dispersion, contrary to the well-known one-dimensional solitons which exist due to competition of nonlinearity and temporal dispersion. We also present elliptical quasiperiodic stationary solutions of the stationary (2+1)-dimensional Landau-Lifshitz equation.Comment: Archive version is already official Published by JNMP at http://www.sm.luth.se/math/JNMP

    Higher Dimensional Cylindrical or Kasner Type Electrovacuum Solutions

    We consider a D dimensional Kasner type diagonal spacetime where metric functions depend only on a single coordinate and electromagnetic field shares the symmetries of spacetime. These solutions can describe static cylindrical or cosmological Einstein-Maxwell vacuum spacetimes. We mainly focus on electrovacuum solutions and four different types of solutions are obtained in which one of them has no four dimensional counterpart. We also consider the properties of the general solution corresponding to the exterior field of a charged line mass and discuss its several properties. Although it resembles the same form with four dimensional one, there is a difference on the range of the solutions for fixed signs of the parameters. General magnetic field vacuum solution are also briefly discussed, which reduces to Bonnor-Melvin magnetic universe for a special choice of the parameters.     Exact SO(8) Symmetry in the Weakly-Interacting Two-Leg Ladder

    A perturbative renormalization group analysis of interacting electrons on a two-leg ladder reveals that at half-filling any weakly repulsive system scales onto an exactly soluble Gross-Neveu model with a hidden SO(8) symmetry. The half-filled ground state is a Mott insulator with short-range d-wave pair correlations. We extract the exact energies, degeneracies, and quantum numbers of *all* the low energy excited multiplets. One energy (mass) m octets contains Cooper pair, magnon, and density-wave excitations, two more octets contain single-particle excitations, and a mass \sqrt{3}m antisymmetric tensor contains 28 "bound states". Exact single-particle and spin gaps are found for the lightly-doped (d-wave paired one-dimension Bose fluid) system. We also determine the four other robust phases occuring at half-filling for partially attractive interactions. All 5 phases have distinct SO(8) symmetries, but share S.C.     GLUT 5 Is Not Over-Expressed in Breast Cancer Cells and Patient Breast Cancer Tissues

    F18 2-Fluoro 2-deoxyglucose (FDG) has been the gold standard in positron emission tomography (PET) oncologic imaging since its introduction into the clinics several years ago. Seeking to complement FDG in the diagnosis of breast cancer using radio labeled fructose based analogs, we investigated the expression of the chief fructose transporter-GLUT 5 in breast cancer cells and human tissues. Our results indicate that GLUT 5 is not over-expressed in breast cancer tissues as assessed by an extensive immunohistochemistry study. RT-PCR studies showed that the GLUT 5 mRNA was present at minimal amounts in breast cancer cell lines. Further knocking down the expression of GLUT 5 in breast cancer cells using RNA interference did not affect the fructose uptake in these cell lines. Taken together these results are consistent with GLUT 5 not being essential for fructose uptake in breast cancer cells and tissues

In recent years there has been significant progress towards reducing the size and improving the characteristics of these devices. This work has been led primarily by the innovative use of new materials and cavity designs. This Review summarizes some of the latest developments, particularly in metallic and plasmonic lasers, improvements in small dielectric lasers, and the emerging area of small bio-compatible or bio-derived lasers. We examine the different approaches employed to reduce size and how they result in significant differences in the final device, particularly between metal- and dielectric-cavity lasers. We also present potential applications for the various forms of small lasers, and indicate where further developments are required.PostprintPeer reviewe

    Inhibition and stimulation of formation of the ferroxidase center and the iron core in Pyrococcus furiosus ferritin

    Ferritin is a ubiquitous iron-storage protein that has 24 subunits. Each subunit of ferritins that exhibit high Fe(II) oxidation rates has a diiron binding site, the so-called ferroxidase center (FC). The role of the FC appears to be essential for the iron-oxidation catalysis of ferritins. Studies of the iron oxidation by mammalian, bacterial, and archaeal ferritin have indicated different mechanisms are operative for Fe(II) oxidation, and for inhibition of the Fe(II) oxidation by Zn(II). These differences are presumably related to the variations in the amino acid residues of the FC and/or transport channels. We have used a combination of UV–vis spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, and isothermal titration calorimetry to study the inhibiting action of Zn(II) ions on the iron-oxidation process by apoferritin and by ferritin aerobically preloaded with 48 Fe(II) per 24-meric protein, and to study a possible role of phosphate in initial iron mineralization by Pyrococcus furiosus ferritin (PfFtn). Although the empty FC can accommodate two zinc ions, binding of one zinc ion to the FC suffices to essentially abolish iron-oxidation activity. Zn(II) no longer binds to the FC nor does it inhibit iron core formation once the FC is filled with two Fe(III). Phosphate and vanadate facilitate iron oxidation only after formation of a stable FC, whereupon they become an integral part of the core. These results corroborate our previous proposal that the FC in PfFtn is a stable prosthetic group, and they suggest that its formation is essential for iron-oxidation catalysis by the protein

    Brain death and postmortem organ donation: Report of a questionnaire from the CENTER-TBI study

    Background: We aimed to investigate the extent of the agreement on practices around brain death and postmortem organ donation. Methods: Investigators from 67 Collaborative European NeuroTrauma Effectiveness Research in Traumatic Brain Injury (CENTER-TBI) study centers completed several questionnaires (response rate: 99%). Results: Regarding practices around brain death, we found agreement on the clinical evaluation (prerequisites and neurological assessment) for brain death determination (BDD) in 100% of the centers. However, ancillary tests were required for BDD in 64% of the centers. BDD for nondonor patients was deemed mandatory in 18% of the centers before withdrawing life-sustaining measures (LSM). Also, practices around postmortem organ donation varied. Organ donation after circulatory arrest was forbidden in 45% of the centers. When withdrawal of LSM was contemplated, in 67% of centers the patients with a ventricular drain in situ had this removed, either sometimes or all of the time. Conclusions: This study showed both agreement and some regional differences regarding practices around brain death and postmortem organ donation. We hope our results help quantify and understand potential differences, and provide impetus for current dialogs toward further harmonization of practices around brain death and postmortem organ donation
